How to read between the lines of business reviews

You can spot fake reviews by looking for 3 specific signs. Discover how to evaluate construction company reviews, identify patterns of genuine complaints, and spot paid-for feedback.

Reviews are the cheapest form of due diligence you have—but only if you know how to read them. Here is how to distinguish truth from marketing.

3 signs of paid-for reviews

  1. A cluster of reviews in the same week—real customers write their feedback over a period of time.
  2. Nothing but superlatives without details—"Great company, highly recommend!" with no mention of names, scope of work, or timelines.
  3. Repetitive phrasing—words like "reliable," "on-time," and "professional" used over and over, as if from a template.

What genuine reviews look like

  • They contain specifics: "Renovated a 6 m² bathroom in October, finished 3 days late, but notified me of the delay himself."
  • They include minor grievances—a real customer almost never writes that everything was perfect.
  • They are sometimes fresh and relate to a scope of work similar to yours.

Bonus: How the company responds

The way a company responds to criticism says more than dozens of praise-filled reviews. Look for professionalism, specifics, and a genuine desire to resolve issues—rather than defensive behavior.

On LocalTrader, reviews are left by verified customers from real projects—and companies with certifications and liability insurance have this confirmed additionally.
